Tasting: Oedipus Brewing

In a series of events which made me wonder how much of my life is coincidence (and how much is my own personal Truman Show). The month Jorgie headed on a short break to Amsterdam was also Beer 52's Amsterdam showcase month.

This meant that her beer filled case of Dutch beers was among good company back on UK soil. It also meant we had a few more nice bottle caps to add to the collection.

We managed to get a trio of beers from Oedipus brewery, named interestingly after an ancient Greek mythical king who married his mother after committing patricide.

Beer #1: Mama
Style: American Pale Ale. ABV: 5%
Nose: Sweet, fresh, fruity
Taste: Orange, grapefruit, passionfruit.
A lasting juicy finish with a hint of spice.

Matt: 7 Jorgie: 6.5
Juicy and refreshing with
a well-balanced bitter finish
Sweet and fresh. An easy-going
fruity pale. However, probably
wouldn't go to the effort of
re-obtaining it when UK craft
breweries have similar offerings.

Beer # 2: Pais Tropical
Style: Tropical Pale Ale ABV: 6%
Nose: BIG citrus, apple
Taste: Lemon, pineapple, zingy with a surprisingly short bitter finish.
Slight creaminess.

Matt: 6Jorgie: 5
Great citrus and zest
flavours. Let down by being a bit
too gassy and needs something to
balance the citrus
  I like the complexity and
  bitterness, but missing a certain
  sweetness / rich finish.

Beer # 3: Mannen Liefde
Style: Saison ABV: 6%
Nose: Light fruits, english toffee.
Taste: Citrusy. peppery, herbal, lemongrass

Our favourite of the bunch, coincidentally is Oedipus' first commercial beer. Translating nicely to 'Man Love'.

Matt: 8Jorgie: 7.5
Like a Czech Pilsner, turned saison,
but extra citrus and herbal.
Super refreshing and more-ish.
A pleasure to drink
Really surprised myself with
how much I enjoyed this beer!
Light and super drinkable with an earth finish.
A big easy drinker and a great intro to saisons.

Final Thoughts

Jorgie: Although I wont be going out of my way to ship over any of the beers I've tried today, Oedipus seem to offer a great range of styles to suit all tastes and, should the opportunity arise, I would be intrigued to try some more of their creative beers. I have a lot of time for the hard work the guys from Oedipus have put into their fun and flavourful brews.

Matt: Through their beers and branding, to me Oedipus aren't shy about trying something different. Given the opportunity I'd definitely have the Mannen Liefde again. Looking online, I'd like to try a couple of their other beers, but for the two pales, the UK market has beers more easily available that suit my preference more.
